Parliament underlines zero-tolerance of forced prostitution

The Parliament has today underlined that forced prostitution can, in no circumstances, be tolerated. Today's resolution calls on the EU Commission and the Member States to put forced prostitution and human trafficking high on the agenda. The expected increase in these despicable crimes in the context of the forthcoming World Cup heightens the need for EU action.
Commenting on the adoption of a resolution on forced prostitution by the European Parliament today, German Green MEP Hiltrud Breyer MEP, coordinator for the EP Committee on Women's Rights said:

The Parliament has today underlined that forced prostitution can, in no circumstances, be tolerated. Today's resolution calls on the EU Commission and the Member States to put forced prostitution and human trafficking high on the agenda. The expected increase in these despicable crimes in the context of the forthcoming World Cup heightens the need for EU action.

Many women, who are forced to work as prostitutes, are victims of organised crime, often deceived by false promises of legitimate work. EU-wide measures must focus both on the prevention human trafficking and the protection of the victims. Immigration policies should be reoriented, so that victims of this crime can be granted the right of residence, which is an important step enabling them to escape forced prostitution. In addition, individuals who knowingly engage the serves of a forced prostitute should be prosecuted.
